| Tartalmi kivonat: | This paper investigates Hungarian and Finnish vowel harmony in the varieties of the two languages spoken in North America. The two varieties are compared to each other and to varieties spoken in Hungary and Finland, based on divergences from Standard Hungarian and Finnish rules governing vowel harmony. Results of the analysis show that disharmonie suffixes that are characteristic of American Hungarian and Finnish can be observed in Hungary and Finland, too. While American Finnish and the investigated variety spoken in Finland exhibit no actual difference in the frequency of disharmonie suffix application, American Hungarian expresses the tendency of its speakers to use the disharmonie derivational suffixes to a greater extent than Hungarian spoken in the old country. The two American varieties appear to be similar in the respect that the productivity of rules dictating vowel harmony decreases in the same manner: back-vowel derivational suffixes prevail over front-vowel ones after stems containing front-vowels. |
