The military utilisation of balloons, zeppelins and airplanes was closely followed by the appearance of weapons and procedures to defend against them. Aircraft were already able to attack not only the troops on the front, but also the enemy’s hinterland. Therefore the fighting parties started to develop the air defence of the hinterland at the beginning of the war. They set up air defence artillery and fighter units, and organised air surveillance, alarm and blackout. Air defence of the hinterland was initially built mainly for a 100–150-kilometer zone behind the front line. However, due to the rapid improvement of air forces and the increasing number of strategic attacks, most of the states made efforts to build out a nation-wide air defence system. In the last year of the war, 35% of the available air defence forces protected the hinterland in Germany. In the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the air defence service of the hinterland was organised in spring 1916. The developed air defence system worked effectively. There was no need to transform it until to World War II.
