The ethnomusicological research of Sami jojkas started in the first third of our century, as a result of the first research expeditions to the Samis. All the explorers admit that one can recognise the oldest melodies in Europe in these jojkas, which could have survived until now only because of the isolated and very tradition keeping society of the Samis. The author discusses the terminology of the jojka folksongs in the first part of her essay, in connection with many opinions of folklorist collectors, ethnomusicological researchers and, of course, her opinion about this subject. After that in the second part of her essay, she discusses the problematics of the present research methods of Sami jojkas, and she presents her own research method, which renders the research of the Sami jojkas' deep structure possible. Turning against the very exaggerated improvization of the jojkas, she sheds light on the fact that these melodies obeys strict rules of traditional musical structures. This new method proposed by the author herself is presented in practice by analising two jojka melodies at the end of the essay. | |
