Facets of (technological) proximity are at the core of theorizing on the sectoral knowledge spillovers of related industries and on the portfolio effect of unrelated variety in the robustness of the regional economy. The utrecht school, a stronghold of such research agendas, has thematized the debate by formulating related variety research questions and by developing the entropy-based methodology. Connections to the evolutionary economic geography discussion have also been established by the utrecht line of inquiry. This paper highlights key aspects of the research on related variety. It is argued that a more explicit attention to policy issues would be beneficial moving forward. Also evolutionary economics can further contribute to the theoretical foundation of the related variety concept.
