Fathers József Kayling, Dávid Fáy and János Szluha were active as missionaries in the Province of Grão Pará e Maranhão, Northeast of Brazil, while Father Ignác Szentmártonyi participated in the expedition along the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers led by the Governor of the state, Francisco Xavier Mendonça Furtado. Father Kayling was the pastor of the aldeia of Tutóia, and for 1 or 2 years worked also as the head of a sugar mill plant, probably of São Bonifácio. Father Fáy and Szluha were missionaries of São Xavier de Acarará near the Pindaré river, where they evangelized among the Guajajaras. Their task was to contact the Amanayé and Gamela people and make them settle down in the village. Although this at-tempt failed, the Fathers left richly detailed accounts on both tribes. Contracted as Royal Astronomer, Father Szentmártonyi determined the geographical locations of many villages in the Amazon basin, and also gathered some unique facts about the tribes of the Upper Rio Negro region. All the four of them were exiled from Brazil during the anti-Jesuit campaign of Marquis of Pombal in the years 1757-1760, and were imprisoned in Portugal because of their foreign origin. Father Fáy died in the São Julião da Barra fortress in 1767, while Kayling and Szentmártonyi were set free only after the fall of the Marquis in 1777. | |
