Working together with the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) after both World Wars the Quakers became celebrities in Hungary and received the Officers’ Cross of the Hungarian Republic’s Order of Merit in 1947, the same year they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The American Friends were forced out of Hungary in the spring of 1949 by the very same communist leaders (of 1919 experience) whom they publicly defended despite the fact that they viewed Bolshevism as a threat to society. | |
