Tartalmi kivonat:Although Sami languages have official minority status in Fenno-Scandinavia, the number of Sami speakers has constantly been decreasing and multilingualism is a norm there. In this paper I focus on the social, socio-economical and linguistic situation of the Sami communities in northern Finland and accordingly claim that such an overview helps the researcher interpret today’s multilingual situation of the north of Finland. The considerations here are thus preliminary to a study on the language use and language attitudes of Sami speakers in the ancient homeland of the Samis in Finland.
