Tartalmi kivonat:The aim of this study is to research and compare how the current pragmatic theories and Quintilian’s rhetoric theory (AD 92-94) deal with the phenomenon of irony. Introducing the most characteristic pragmatic theories, I study the development of the notion of verbal irony, drawing a line of development among the theories. Having examined Quintilian (AD 92-94), Grice (1975/1989; 1978/1989), Leech (1983), (Sperber and Wilson 1992), Giora (2003) es Attardo (2000) I show the theoretical consequences of the comparison of how these models explain the phenomenon of irony on the basis of empirical research. The comparison reveals that the characteristic features of irony examined by the different theories can be categorized and compared with the help of Quintilian’s genera- and species-based irony-classification - which solves the problem that most of the aforementioned pragmatic theories do not make this distinction, thus the correspondence of theory and empirical data is less visible -, and also that irony always appears with other figures or tropes. Having made my remarks, I suggest the integration of the theories of Quintilian (AD 92-94), Giora (2003) and Attardo (2000), which might make it possible to describe a bigger set of empirical data. Besides the description of a wider range of empirical data, we can expect stronger explanatory force and also a more detailed description of understanding/comprehension from such an integrated model.
