Tartalmi kivonat:The outbreak of war in 1593 meant the first real possibility for the Ottoman vassal principality of Transylvania, a small country with a very limited sovereignty to join the European venture of driving back the Turks. The war (1593-1606) started with great expectations, but it brought little glory for Transylvania, and resulted in a crisis lasting for years. Examining the formation and changes of the Transylvanian policy the outlines of a model can be observed, the basic elements of which were securing and saving of Transylvanian statehood. So far scholars emphasized the changing character, the unpredictable caprice and weakness of the policy of the Transylvanian princes. The author maintains, that the short reign of Andrew Bathori can be considered a turningpoint of both the Ottoman-Habsburg war and the Transylvanian role in it, and by this aspect not only our understanding about the cardinal-prince may be enriched, but a new idea of preserving Transylvanian statehood can be outlined as well.
