Tartalmi kivonat:The author studies the types of artificial defences applied in Eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages. Three methods are emphasized by the author: 1., strengthening the camping ground 2., fortification formed by carts 3., trenches and ditches. In the forefront of the author's attention are the data on the Khazars and he lists some data parallel to them. When dealing with trenches and ditches, he discourses about those around fortresses and towns, writes about hedges and mentions some special examples. All three defense methods were applied in the regions neighbouring the Eastern European steppe and in those for away from it. In this respect the Eastern European steppe of the early Middle Ages shows no difference when compared to neighbouring areas.
