At the same time, we are less informed about the relations between the Kingdom of Hungary and its minorities during the war. Austria-Hungary confronted primarilySerbia at the dawn of the war and this question is worth examining, since a remarkable Serbian minority of 500,000 people lived along the southern border of the Kingdom of Hungary close to the front line. The Hungarian government and the Austrian-Hungarian military leadership perceived the absurdity of the situation and its “powder keg” character, thus they were willing to make concessions for this community in order to maintain its loyalty between 1914 and 1918. |
